Creating your own Layouts

When you've played all of the layouts included with TaiwanTiles, you can create your own, using the built-in layout designer.

To access the layout designer, simply click the layout designer icon Toolbar-layout in upper right-hand corner of the game board.

This is the layout designer. Simply click anywhere you want a tile to appear in the layout. If you want to remove a tile, just click on it to make it disappear.

Toolbar-for layout

This is the toolbar for designing layouts.

Toolbar-count This number represents the number of tiles in your current layout. (Most layouts become too much work and not enough play after about 400 tiles, so we don't recommend using more than that.) An average user can play a 100-tile game in about 5-10 minutes.

Please note: Layouts with an odd number of tiles will not be solvable. If you prefer to be able to solve a layout, using an even number of tiles will be more enjoyable.

Toolbar-layer select These arrows help you add layers to your layout. That is, stack tiles on top of each other. To add or move up a layer, click the up arrow. To move down a layer, click the down arrow.

In the screenshot below, you can see how the layout designer is working on a second layer, stacking tiles on top of the existing rectangle block below.

Layout-layers
You can stack tiles up to 6 levels high. You can also offset the tiles and lay them over the joints between tiles below. Be creative!

Toolbar-cleansweep The brush removes all tiles from the current layout so that you can start over.

Toolbar-save This disk saves the current layout to your hard drive. You can make a special folder for your own layouts, and the Layout Builder will remember the folder you used last time. After you give your new game a name, you can use the brush to clean the slate so you can start a new game layout.

Toolbar-open This folder allows you to find a previously-saved layout for further editing. These file names end with “.mlay” (for "Mahjong Layout").

Toolbar-layout When you're done editing your layout, simply click the layout button at the top again to return to the game board.

Toolbar-newTo play your newly created layout, click the New Game button, which causes the New Game window appears:
Layout Selection
This time, after “Choose a layout,” click on the “From File” button.

Select the new game from the folder where you saved it, and click “Open.”
